In 1987, Community Lodgings was founded by eight Alexandria churches with a mission to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence and self-sufficiency. Our Transitional Housing Program currently provides housing and intensive case management services for 13 homeless families empowering them through counseling, skills and stability over a two-year period. To further address the mission of self-sufficiency, Community Lodgings opened a Family Learning Center in 1998 to provide courses in computer literacy and ESL for transitional clients and other disadvantaged adults in the city; we currently serve 50 adults through this program to increase their employability. In 2002, we expanded the Family Learning Center to provide full-family services and added a Youth Education Program (YEP) for our homeless kids and other at-risk children in the community. In Spring 2008 the Family Learning Center space was doubled in size, allowing the program to expand and provide more instructional time for more families and children each day. Now, 78 at-risk youth and 50 adults attend the center daily. With trusted bilingual staff, and growing programs and services, Community Lodgings is Alexandria’s best resource for self-help and life improvement. Through our Transitional and Affordable Housing, and Youth and Adult Education Programs – all within walking distance of the community – we touch over 250 lives per week.
