"Opening Doors to Independence Since 1987"
Over a maximum two-year transition period, we provide housing for families as well as support on issues such as education, employment, finances, health, housing maintenance and emergency services. There are currently 14 families enrolled in THP; all of these families were homeless before entering our housing program. In the past year,  eight of our families completed the program successfully and are now living independently – seven are renting homes and one actually purchased a home of their own.
All youth and adult education programs are held at our Family Learning Center in Alexandria's Arlandria community. Our Youth Education Program now serves 78 at-risk children ranging in age from 8 to 18. All children in our program are low-income. Language barriers and a lack of education are typical in most Arlandria homes. Eighty-two percent of those in our youth programs are Latino and 18% are African-American; sixty-six percent of participants are male and 34% are female. Programs serve as a deterrent to gang influence in the community. All THP children are required to attend Youth Education Program. The remaining program slots are filled by at-risk children in the community.

Our Adult Education Program provides English as a Second Language and literacy courses for 50 adults as well as workshops on parenting, job counseling and finances. There are two goals for this program. First, we aim to advance English speaking and writing skills among adults in the Arlandria community to expand employment opportunities for them. We also work to improve communication between parents, CLI staff and school administrators to help parents better advocate for their children.
The Community Outreach Program is administered by our bilingual staff. The program meets basic human needs, and prevents homelessness and foreclosure for at-risk families in Alexandria’s predominately Latino Arlandria community through two components. First, our certified housing counselor assists families to address homeowner issues. Second, our caseworkers provide walk-in assistance to members of the community that seek assistance for basic needs such as food, rent, utilities and medicine.
